Dear Bob Cartoceti,

Many years ago (in 2000?), you represented me pro-bono after I was arrested at a circus protest on campus at Western Connecticut State University. The charges were ultimately dropped, and I often think about how the course of my life would have been different if I did not have access to an attorney who was willing to represent me, a college student who literally had nothing to give in return. This is a belated and heartfelt expression of my appreciation of your time and energy in that case.

After completing college and grad school, I began teaching at-risk students, and I eventually became a teacher within the prison and probation system in North Carolina and Vermont. Today, I am a teacher in a traditional high school, where I teach community-based learning. I am well aware of the fact that a career in education would have been closed off to me had I acquired a criminal record. And I certainly would not have had the opportunity to work with incarcerated students, which was a transformative experience for me. In fact, my experience working with those with criminal backgrounds opened my eyes to the fact that a criminal record, even a misdemeanor, can close off many work opportunities and make life very, very difficult. I feel so fortunate that I was able to fight back in what was a very unjust situation, and I thank you for that. You taking on that pro bono case really made a huge difference in my life.

Furthermore, to be young, idealistic, and accused of something I was not guilty of was a pivotal experience. Had the outcome been different, I might have really lost my belief in the judicial system and in the idea of justice in general. Today, I still hold on to the belief that injustice should be called out and challenged; I'm so grateful that my only experience with the law validated this belief.

Thank You,

Sara L.
